Good Omen

Petersfield Provincial Park

Westmount, NS

2021

Robins hold a special place in my heart for family reasons.

I also consider bluejays an omen of reassurance and support. Others might ignore the tiny wonders of the outdoors, but they ground me and bring me peace when life feels unpredictable.

Starting the Day

Lake Simcoe

Orillia, ON

2017

Quiet mornings can be a wonderful escape with all they have to offer. Lake Simcoe was such a place for quiet mornings: early spring morning, fog over the water, and birds everywhere. Nature was there to be absorbed and troubles, despite being very present, were nowhere to be found.

King of the Castle

Two Rivers Wildlife Park

Huntington, NS

2022

This guy was the most playful of the two at the park.

Sometimes you wonder whether or not they realize

how cheeky they are in front of the camera.

Birds Only

Dufferin Islands Nature Area

Niagara Falls, ON

2019

For a couple years I had a job that afforded me the opportunity to go out for activities or excursions with clients: sporting games, bowling, laser tag... It was pretty neat to be able to say I could do these things for my job. A common activity was hiking. Getting to see the Niagara region and all the little things it had to offer was a joy.

Red wing black birds, in particular, reminded me of my prairie home. They have a distinct call. You can't miss it. I don't hear it on the Island but sometimes, when I'm in a nostalgic mood, I'll watch a specific animated short on the NFB site that features this very sound.

Hide and Seek

Stockton Hill

Winona, MN

2009

This pup , I would imagine, is long gone

but she was a joy of liveliness in a place that was,

as far I'm now concerned, dead.

She would get herself in trouble here and there and

was never shy about saying hello.

She was a much needed balance.

Autumn Perch

Colliery Route Old Rail Walkway

Glace Bay, NS

2021

Late summer afternoon walk along a trail that used to be an old railroad. You don't often hear trains on the Island anymore but there are a number of these wee creatures.

What Rain?

Eastern Rocks off Ingonish Island

Ingonish, NS

2022

Didn't see whales on this whale tour,

but who can begrudge a cute face like this?

Our faces were soaked from the boat ride and rain,

but this one made the effort worthwhile.

Late Summer Sleeps

Two Rivers Wildlife Park

Huntington, NS

2021

Just watching this little one sleep the afternoon away

as we walked past...

I smile and yawn every time I see this photo. It's so peaceful; a place  and state I've always enjoyed.

Effortless Majesty

Chéticamp Beach

Chéticamp, NS

2010

It's a rare occurrence, even on the Island,

but when it happens you just have to be ready.

Winter Still No Match

Dufferin Islands Nature Area

Niagara Falls, ON

2019

Early spring in Niagara Falls.

Birds out in abundance among the trees and reeds.

Stumpy Settled

Two Rivers Wildlife Park

Huntington, NS

2022

Not sure if Stumpy is still at the park but you couldn't help but smile when you saw him playing or, in this case, curious about the onlookers or even the nearby reindeer, when this shot was taken.
